yes they can. Fire ants will bite you and the bite can swell up. It will depend on if you have a reaction to the bite to how much it will swell. You should keep the area clean and keep something on it for itching. You can put ice on it if it is swelling to much and you can also soak your foot in salt to help with the swelling.

If your foot swelled up after a fire ant bite you had an antiphilactic reaction. Your allergic. And you need to beware the next time it could effect more than just your foot. It can effect breathing and be quite dangerous.
Also, if you have had a reaction then you can't donate blood for 1 year.
