1. Visual: It is not good to see the signals.
2. Interference: There are a lot of sources of visual light that can saturate/block the remote control signal. (The same way that two radio stations with the same frequency block each other.)

Everything about Infrared LEDs work just as an LED lamp would. The exception is that infrared is a light wave that is beyond the sensitive region of the human eye. You can't see it. So, when using it, you are not distracted by the flashing lamp that signals the tv to change channels etc. That's the reason why. ;-)

Infra-red IS light. It is in the part of the spectrum invisible to the human eye. Ultra-violet is light, too.

Because white light contains all visible wavelengths (look through a prism and you will see it all separated out). So when you turn on the lights the TV will start changing it self, getting louder and softer turning on and off..... It would be chaos

Duh! Because if they used visible spectrum light signals the channel wold change every time Uncle Parmesan came into the room and turn the light switch! ("It's too bright in here.......It's too dark in here!")
