I have two cats (1 female and 1 male). They eat about the same amount and get about the same amount of sleep and exercise. The female is spayed and the male is nuetered. The female is really fat and someone told me that female cats get fat after they have been spayed. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

It is not the operation that causes the weight gain. It is the fact that some cats, now that they are not running around outside looking for "true love" and fighting over it, but are still eating the same amount of food... well just like people.
Two things must happen. You must cut down the food intake or switch to a low calorie brand.
You must encourage Chubs to play more. Get some toys.
As for why the male isn't gaining weight on the same regimen. He might have a different metab(by)lism than the female. Surely you know a person who can eat and eat and never get fat.

Males have a higher metabolism but no cat should be fat as this predisposes them to diabetes and high blood pressure which can both lead to blindness and kidney failure. Clearly you love your cats or you would not have had them altered. Try calling your Vet and asking him to recommend a change in food. And for more exercise buy some loose catnip and spread a pinch where the female lounges it will at least get her stretching.

The cat could have a thyroid problem that would cause weight gain. Check with a vet who can do a blood test to determine if any medical issues are present. If the cat checks out ok, look at buying a weight reducing food for the cat.

Not true if the cat is getting the right exercise and food. It might be that her metabolism has slowed down a little because she is spayed. In that case you will have to make less food available to her or buy the food for indoor cats or older cats. I think they tend to have fewer calories.
