I have researched this and apparently when it is installed it connects to microsoft every day to give a system update. Surely this is outrageous - especially when 90% of people don't even know it exists.

Also it is has been an integrated part of windows for over a year now and is impossible to uninstal.

It also collects information about your entire system - Including your Hard Drive Serial number (what right do they have to collect that sort of info from your machine?)

Yes! and you are correct, it connects without you knowing and checks whether you have a pirated version or not. A definite violation of privacy which should not be allowed. Oh and by the way, it very often even messes up LEGAL versions!

Everyone had the option of not downloading it when it was offered as a windows update, no point in moaning now.
It is not malicous nor spyware cos you all agreed to it being installed.
What did you think it was going to do.
You can get rid of it, do a search for a removal tool.

Seems to operate on the princible 'if you've got nothing to hide..'

A similar argument is made in favour of ID cards, CCTV cameras and all kinds of other intrusions the govt and business seems to want to make into our lives.
The answer is I do have something to hide. I like to sit around in my pants, scratching my a**e and picking my nose etc..etc.
nothing illegal but I'd rather people didn't know about it (oops!)
the point is it's the same with my computer.

nope, it's just microsoft way of constantly checking their users' copy of windows OS; to regularly validate the authenticity of their products out in the market used by each costumers. microsoft is continuously fighting software pirates by this validation tool.

roflmao.. I don't know about the genuine advantage is malicious, but, it's a necessary evil.
Now, if you had asked if WINDOWS itself, was that, I would have said heck yeah! LOL .. but, relax, it's all necessary.. otherwise, switch to apple, or linux.

No, I don't think so at all. Here's my recommendation to you if you don't like it:
1. Don't download it, or
2. Uninstall it, or
3. Block its access to the internet with a firewall.

It's not ok. You only need to have your copy of XP validated once. No-one is going to downgrade to an illegal copy, are they?

It's okay. Why make such a big deal about it?

It's supposed to stop illegal copies.
