When I was young, in a cone.
My father used to take me to Thrift's Drug Store (I grew up in California) once in a while for an ice cream cone. (One of the few happy memories of my childhood)
I loved trying to lick it fast enough to keep it from running down my hand and then the ice cream would soften the cone and give the cone the flavor of the ice cream. Usually chocolate, because I loved Rocky Road.
If I got to have a double decker it might make the cone taste of pistachio because, I'd forget to tell the girl to put the Rocky Road on the bottom. Which I preferred. (Finicky little kid don't you think?)
Alas, now that I am an old crone, my teeth have become so sensitive that I hardly eat ice cream at all and when I do it is in a cup.
But put that cone on top!

It depends on the type of icecream. If it is a plain flavour like vanilla or chocolate than in a cone for the added crunchiness. For more exotic flavours like Chunky Monkey or Cherries Jubilee than a cup so that the cone flavour doesn't get in the way. But always a sugar or waffle cone never a cake cone.

Cone, because I like to finish without throwing anything away. Plus, the cone usually comes with a paper cone on the outside and I rather throw away paper than a plastic cup.

I rationalize it this way: I shouldn't be eating the ice cream in the first place, but if I have it in a cup, I'm saving all those calories from not having the cone.....all those calories.....sheesh
But, still I say CUP.

Cone - if I buy from a shop / ice cream van - I feel like I'm getting more for my money.
Cup - when I was younger, because I liked to make it sloshie and drink it .... The things we do when we're kids...
