I believe that importance is in the eye of the beholder.

I don't think so! We depend on other life forms that are not human to survive, without them "we" humans would die!They can survive without us, but we can't survive without them . Which would you say is more important?Gee, what would it do to us to know that there was a higher form of human intelligence out there some where? That's a very narrow - minded way to look at the wonders around us we are currently destroying. Ah, the human ego. It'll be the death of us. I also suggest you look at Drake's Equation. With 200,000,000,000 stars in our galaxy alone and as many galaxies beyond, it's unlikely we're the only 'sentient' species in the cosmos. Note I avoid the use of the world intelligent here ;-)
