I've been reading all this stuff about how bad traffics is in LA but I don't think is much of a difference than the traffic here in Chicago...I've also read that the cabs are super expensive and unsafe...I'm only going to be there for 2 days. I'm staying at the Millenium Biltmore. I'm planning on going to the beach (Malibu or Venice), going to Hollywood/Beverly Hills, and to a soccer game at the LA Coliseum on Sunday...Base on my plans, what do you recommend: cab or rental car?

I did some research on car rental fees and they're about $30 a day for an average, mid size car.

You may end up paying as much for the rental car as you would a taxi but go with a rental car because you are also paying for convenience, if you have a car you can be spontaneous and come and go on your own time, as opposed to waiting several minutes for a cab - and if you're seeing sites within city limits you probably won't even use half a tank of gas. Also when you're sitting in traffic the meter in that cab won't stop running. Alamo rental car is charging 53 bucks for two days in a 4 door economy right now and if you show them your round trip ticket you can pay with your debit card.

If you are over 25 rent a car. The gas will suprise you (in CA it gets kinda high) but you see so much from a rental car that you would not otherwise see. On weekends you tend to not have too much traffic... except around LAX there is always traffic. Check with your hotel about parking costs. The alternate is... look for a post on craigslist.org about housesitting or house swap... maybe you can get a car included.

Absolutely rent a car. No question. Cabs are few and far between because the city is so spread out and cost a fortune. Just make sure you don't get a parking ticket on the street (at a meter). They can cost $150.

Rent a car. There aren't many cabs available in LA, the only place you might find one is at places like the airport, train station or if you call one. Most people in LA do not take cabs.

2 days? Take a Taxi. They are less stress than renting a car and being liable, and aside from that the minimum fee for renting a car is equal to about 2 days worth of light cab fare. To summarize: TAXI!

Much better to rent, cabs are horribly expensive in LA...or better yet, take the train or buses if you can! =)
