My dentist says I have "open bite" - this is when not all your teeth come together when you close your mouth. She says braces MIGHT fix it. I don't want to go through the trouble of braces if I don't even know it will work. Any experience fixing open bite? Any experience living with open bite? I.e. what will happen if I don't fix it?

I don't understand how braces might fix it - my teeth look perfectly straight already.

I have an open bite .Its because when I swallow I push on my front teeth .I am not sure if thats your problem or not .If that is your problem you would have to get therapy to stop that before you get braces. My open bite doesn't bother me .My dentist adjusts my moth to where I can close my mouth comfortably. My jaw bothers me at times but I think that's from all the dental work.I heard once from a dentist that our teeth shift forward as we get older ,but I am not sure if that true or not.If it doesn't bother you you can always leave it alone and still check out what you would have to do to fix it.Than if you ever decide to fix it you will be going in the right direction

Well I've never done it but my dentist talked to me about it so I went to the orthodontist and they started talking about jaw surgery and this and that and then braces to fix it and I said forget that. I have a slight overbite, but it's nothing that's affected my life as far as me not being happy with the way I look, aside from the TMJ I'm not going to worry about it. Good luck if you decide to doing anything about it.
