A coat of paint over ugly wood paneling may be just what you need to lighten and brighten a room. Whether you are seeking a traditional look or contemporary style, painted paneling can fit in. One note of caution, however: Once painted, always painted. Stripping paint from paneling would be a daunting task, so it's not a decision to take lightly, particularly if the paneling is in good shape.

The fact that we are living and breathing and able to do all these things. The fact that we are not rocks and some divine coincidence made use who we are instead of some inorganic atom. The fact we can give things worth. We can categorise. Its all beautiful, the sight, the sound, the feel, the emotion, the taste. Even pain. We can feel that not many other things can. Pain may be painful, but we can feel it just as we can feel happy. Its amazing really that out of all of this we can do these things. Although it seems to suck sometimes its still wonderful. random fact: if you shoot a rabbit, it doesnt know why it feels pain, it doesn't register that there is an explanation, it just knows it feels pain and as a reaction will run away, even if its dying. Shoot a human (even if they did not know what a gun was) it would realise its something launched, have some sort or knowledge of what to do and so on. I dont think this was relevant but its written now... But if youre looking for one reason it would definitely be pie.

Two options, wall paper over it, you will need to use a wall paper liner if there are grooves in the paneling. If you use an easy up/easy down wall covering it can be taken down and the paneling is not disturbed.

Also, paint is an option, faux finishing or straight paint. Drywall compound can be put in grooves to smooth the surface. This will prevent you from recovering the paneling if you decide you want it back in the future.

Paint & stencil/border paper. To make the eyes go across the room instead of up and down. You could paint 1/2 and put a wall ledge to break up the wood look.
Use a neutral color when you paint, to go with your furniture and drapes. Accent with mirrors and candles to add warmth and a homey feeling.

I bought 1x8s and 1x6s in pine and alternated them down the walls giving my living room a lodge feel. A coat of polyurethane with a built in sealer and it is brighter and beautiful.
