Well, the website didn't say to put them in a crate, but to create a "safe haven" where as you are using the crate as it's small, safe comfortable area for Abby.

Like the website said, do not show any signs of fear or nervousness. Be calm and gently address to her that it is okay. I know it said to restrain from giving rewards or punishment, but when you reassured Abby that everything is alright and Abby isn't hiding anymore, you have to praise her for that. That is what you want Abby to do so by praising it, she will know it's the right thing to do.

I think you should try to have a leash on her. Whenever she tries to hide under your bed, your leash will stop her from doing that. Be by her side and comfort her. Try talking to her or scratch her to distract her from the noise. But remember, you have to stay calm and confident. Eventually, I think Abby will get use to the sound of it, so keep doing this daily and hopefully soon she wouldn't hide under your bed anymore. Don't just do this in your room... but do this every where in your house, so she knows that the sound won't hurt her.

I never had a dog with noise phobia before, but I really do hope that this will work =).

Our very large dog also hated fireworks and big thunderstorms. After 10 years of trying everything, we finally started using medications. We used "Acepromazine" about 20 minutes prior to event. Worked for up to 4 hours. It relaxed her a lot and the loud noises became a non-event. We would also put her in the crate until loud noises were done. Good luck!

mine does the same thing with fireworks and also thunder storms. I found 2 things that help. one is an over the counter purchased at petsmart tranquilizer, It is all natural and doesn't hurt the dog. They have several to choose from and my vet approves. The other is to buy a tape of storms or fireworks and play it all day. This takes time but does work. you start it real quiet and then increase the volume. He becomes used to the noise and decreases his fear

I had a dog named Gwen. She was a retriever. She was skittish in regards to any loud noise. Fireworks and thunderstorms were the main problem. She would run and hide and shake every time. My vet recommended tranquilizers but I thought that was overkill.

For me...I would just pet her and try to comfort her with my presence. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. I think just talking them through it is the best thing to do.

Some animals are just sensitive to sound. Make sure she has a place to hide & she will be okay. I have a full grown shepard who used to hide under t he workbench in the garage during a thunderstorm. He did have a good reason, a tree was hit, & landed right outside his doghouse! You can try to de-sensitize him, but if it actually hurts the animals ears, so how can you help that?

your dog is traumatized from the noise.
1 of mine acts the same way for about 2-4 mos after the 4th. I just give her time & losts of TLC. Next time, try to remove your dog from the noise for the night.
I'm all for crates but it may stress the dog out more as it may feel it can't escape from the noise.
good luck

Just take her outside when the sun first goes down and sit there with her for a little while each night.

Change the routine, so that running under the bed at sundown is no longer the routine.

Some dogs never overcome this fear. Consult a behaviorist who will be able to visit with you and your pet and outline a plan of treatment specifically for your dog. The article you referred to suggested "some" dogs would feel more comfortable in a crate, not that they should be crated.

I guess your dog has sensitive hearing when fireworks are being let off keep her in the same room as comfort her and turn the sound up on your radio or tv.
