There are so many factors that play into picking a color for a room, so really the answer can be anything! The best thing to do is to pick something that compliments everything you already have. Look at the furniture, the flooring (carpet, rug, wood), your accessories, wall hangings or paintings, etc...and try to find the central underlying color.
If you are starting from scratch, then the world is your palette! Just make sure that you can carry it through to the rest of your house (unless you want all of your rooms to be individualistic). As far as trimming goes, I like to go by the oldest trick in the book: white. It really has a way to make things pop. My living room is currently a whispy silvery gray with white trimming. Without the trimming, the color would get lost and you wouldn't even notice it. I chose the light color because I have high ceilings and dark furniture so I wanted to keep the place looking open and very modern (white and beige are too boring).

White or off-white is borrringggg!!!! Try to do the trim in cream if you have time/money - it's nice for contrast.
Try taupe for the walls.Make sure it has a little warmth in it, otherwise it might look gray.
When you shop for the paint, bring along pictures of your furniture (close-up) for color comparisons if you don't have swatches. Color is very deceiving - I know I've had to repaint an entire living room since the color was too pink'ish. What looks like a blush-beige on the sample could very well look like pink all over the walls.

It is important that the color in the different rooms around the house come together logically. Analyze each of the tones; determine which colors, and in what proportions, they complement each other to give the final result.
Here are ten household helpful hints for choosing room colors:
1 Brighten up the darker spaces by painting the walls in pale colors.
2 If you paint a high ceiling a dark color, will make it look lower.
3 A light blue or a gray make a small room seem wider.
4 Use the wall colors to mark off areas according to actives.
5 Red and reddish tones are bold, exciting colors which stimulate movement. They are especially suitable for work areas.
6 Yellows are warm, bright colors, ideal for dark spaces to make us feel cozy.
7 Green is essentially linked to life; it reminds us of nature and is perfect for interiors we want to connect with outside.
8 Blues are fresh, harmonious, and easy to combine. They remind us of vast extensions of sea and sky.
9 To make a room more radiant, you can paint the walls in light colors and introduce dashes of color through the furniture, complements, and ornaments.
10 Neutral colors like beiges and browns combine well with other tones and give the room a natural feel.
Color is clearly the most visible linking factor between separate rooms and is ideal for giving consistency to the decoration scheme of a whole house.

go down to earth colors best... trim - a dark bold color like a dark brown green even dark blue!
for the walls look for a lighter shade of the color of trim you used! so if you used brown then go with a light beige or a sage color brown is great every color goes with brown and beige...

Cool colors are nice - maybe a light blue or a mint green. I painted my room a nice, light green color and have been very satisfied. It is a very versatile paint color because virtually any other color is its complement.

I like mine, it is a lite sand color with bright white trim. Clean, neutral, without being white.

If you're looking for a cozy feel, try rich browns, burgundy, dark greens and jewel tones.
If you're looking for a way of brightening up the space, creams, pastels, especially yellows and light greens are good.
