It's a solid start. Depending upon your current weight and the pace, you probably burned approximately 300 calories. Assuming you eat exactly the number of calories you need to sustain yourself, you'd lose about 1 pound every 12 days (3500 calories = 1 pound) (if you walked every day).

Remember, if you are serious about weight loss, try using a free tool such as http://www.fitday.com to monitor your food intake and your daily activities. It'll help you keep your diet / and exercise in check. Failure to keep track of your diet plans, will cause your gains / losses to be random.

Also, keep in mind that if you wakl every day for 3 miles, your body will get used to that load, and you'll have to either increase the pace or distance to get the same calorie burn. Hence, a month or two from now, you may burn only 275 calories, since the body has adapted...

Feel free to contact me if you have other questions or what not.

Good luck.

Walking is an excellent exercise, as far as weight loss. You can add hand weights later, if you want to work the upper body a little more. Most things I've read are against ankle weights, though - too much strain on the knees and hips.

Be sure and hydrate while you walk, and have a nice stretch afterward, once the muscles are all warm and supple.

Yes, this is a great start! Now reduce your fat intake and reduce the time it takes you to do the three miles by about 3-5 minutes a day. Try not to loose more than 1/2 to 1 pound a week. You are on your way to great health!
