How many watts of electricity does the standard home vaccume cleaner use ? Will a 1000 watt portable generator run it ?

There is no "standard" figure.

Looking at an on-line catalogue I saw a range of machines which drew between 1100W and 2500W.

You also need to careful because elec. motors always draw a lot of power very briefly as they start up. Although a vacuum cleaner motor's start up should be less problematic than other motor applications.

To be safe you may want to double your cleaner's wattage to determine the generators power level.
