Atherosclerosis, sometimes referred to as arteriosclerosis is the term used to describe the narrowing of blood vessels, arteries in particular, with plaque, or atheroma. The atheroma itself contains fibrosis, or scarring (medical term is sclerosis), frequently has microcalcification, inflammation and cholesterol crystals.
