Atherosclerosis, sometimes referred to as arteriosclerosis is the term used to describe the narrowing of blood vessels, arteries in particular, with plaque, or atheroma. The atheroma itself contains fibrosis, or scarring (medical term is sclerosis), frequently has microcalcification, inflammation and cholesterol crystals.
The best analogy is the gunk that narrows the pipes in your home. At some point, the narrowing becomes so severe, that the pipes cannot work properly, and some action must be taken.
