The same amount of proof that Alexander the Great did what he was purported to have done. His exploits were written down in ancient texts by people who knew of him personally in a language which suffers under translation difficulties. One reason we can be reasonable sure of his exploits is because we can see the very real impact of his campaigns (the spread of Hellenism throughout many cultures, for one thing.)
There is little to no doubt, even amongst the nonbelieving community that the people and places of the Bible, at least most of them, are/were real, including Jesus. What they did and said, well now, that just depends on whether you trust the author. I believe, by the way, that Alexander really did build a land bridge to Tyre to destroy it, amazing as it sounds, because I have no reason to believe otherwise.
My question in return: Why do some choose to not believe the Bible. That's the real question, isn't it? Yes, there are some fantastical stories in the scriptures, almost as mindstaggering as evolutionary theory. Do some find the Bible untrustworthy? Or do some, if they're totally honest with themselves, just not like the implications of what it says?

Oh yes! Historians already have proof that Jesus existed and was crucified. And you know when the Israelites crossed the red see and the Egyptians ran after them. The Egyptians in their chariots drowned in that sea. And people have found things that form into a wheel of a chariot and bones of horses, and all things like that. The mountain that is now called Mont Sinai is probably not the one in the Bible. The real Mont Sinai is farther away! And on the mountain people have wondered why there are ashes there and the rocks are all scorched. It's because when God talk to his people in the desert with thunder and lightning. It's that so cool how there is proof of what God has said in his word. I am awe struck!

In the Book of Genesis it said that the descendants of Ishmael (those who follow Islam) will not get along with the descendants of Isaac (the Jewish people).
In the Old Testament, it mentions different kingdoms coming and taking over the Israelite kingdoms. They were fulfilled. It also mentioned that the Jews would go into exile and that even though the Jewish nation would cease to exist for awhile, God would be watching over his Chosen People and they would return to the land they were exiled from. In 1947 Israel became a country again.
There are a lot more prophecies that are mentioned in the Old Testament and have been fulfilled. Some have not been yet.

Yes, there have been archaeological findings that confirm the historical accounts in Scripture, and none that successfully refuted any. There are extra-Biblical writings that confirm much of what was written in the New Testament. The New Testament books were done by the end of the first century, many of the writings were completed by 70 AD. There were plenty of people around at that time who could have refuted what the gospels stated, but none did. The Roman and Jewish leaders could have easily squelched the idea of Christ's resurrection by just producing the corpse. They didn't because they couldn't, it wasn't there.

These are some great examples people are giving. Thanks for a great question.Years ago skeptics were saying that there was no King David. Then they found evidence of him. That really caught my attention, because it was alleged that he was myth. But for a story to go thousands of years based on nothing but the Holy Scriptures, while people mocked it, and finally be proved true. If the stories of David had been lies, the writers would have picked a different king whose existence could have been more easily verified. It also demonstrates how complete the destruction was.

There is substantial evidence supporting Scriptures, including archaeological evidence, outside source documentation including but not limited to official Roman records, Jewish records, and the Historian Josephus, not to mention relics like the Cross that Jesus was Crucified upon and the Shroud of Turin.

Well, the Bible obvious has some historical significance ... examples like Pompeii's destruction by a volcano (though no proof of God being involved or any of the justification provided for its cause).

Are you joking? There is more evidence in the historicity of the Bible than that of the Roman, Persian, Babylonian Empires combined. There is so much evidence out there. If you really want some evidence try www.carm.org they have a lot of info there.

Jericho still stands, the rivers and seas named in Genesis, the temples that still stand, the roman coins that depicted Caesar and many more proven by archaeologists. And the biggest proof that God and the Bible are true are the billions of hearts and minds that have accepted the true of God in their hearts.

What is your criteria for proof? The archeological record corraborates many of the details that are referenced in the old testament. But proof? Do you need to put your fingers in the holes in his hand?
