Well this is how I did it:

First you put the litter box right next to the door (inside the house) for about a week, then move it outside the door (but you have to keep your door open for a week or so(of course you close the door at night and bring the box in next to the door at night and when you are not home), then kitty will know where to find it). Then once kitty realizes were to go to find his litter box, he should have no problem scratching on the door when he is ready to go out side. Just make sure you clean the area well where kitty's litter box use to be, or else kitty will smell the area and go there. Zero Odor works great or just clean good and use some fabreze.

I agree with the ideas about gradually moving the box toward the door, then outside.

However, make sure there is somewhere for your cat to go out there! It can't be all pavement and lawn. Cats need sand or dirt to scratch in first, or they will not go. It's an instinct thing.

This may sound gross, but what also works is take some of the dirty litter out of the litter box and place it outside where you want your pet to go. It will recognize the smell and go there.

Move the litter box outside. Once the cat gets use to that, remove the litter box.

Slowly move the litter box toward the doorway, day by day. Eventually put the box outside. Then get rid of it. It may take awhile, but I have heard they learn this well if you transition them.
