Many words are similar in Afrikaans (home language) and English, though the pronunciation is totally different. Any other such patterns? ok, the Sino-Tibetan dialects don't count!

Afrikaans is the most modern European language, drawing from Duth, English, French and German. Of course the are similarities (cognates).
How about?

no it goes like this .me land is me land,dokter is daughter and in persian it means little girl.oupa en ouma means grandfather and grand mother.lekker is africans slang ,meaning sweet or something is nice.lekker sous a firecracker,sous is like.any more africans write me ,i am an ex south african living in israel.shalom means peace,totsiens is goodbye,from mikhal in israel.
