I just got over a major bout and learned quite a bit. The rashes caused by poison ivy are the result of oil from the plant penetrating the skin. This oil can be on the live plant, dead branches, clothes. Washing with brown soup and washing clothes within a couple hours of contact can stop the rash from forming.

The intensity of the rash depends upon the thickness and toughness of the skin in affected locations. They also determine how long it will take the rash to appear. For example, the skin on you palm is most likely thick and calloused, so it may never break out. The skin on the back of the hand, on the leg, or on the face is much thinner, so it will develop quickly and can be quite severe.

The consequence of all this is people thinking that they are spreading the rash by scratching already affected areas. In fact, by that time, the damage is already done, it just hasn't appeared yet.

Regarding your swimming question, it won't contribute to any further rashes, but if the skin in an already formed rash is broken from scratching or just bad blistering, he could be at risk of infection from the water.

I've found that Extra Strength Benadryl "cream" seems to best reduce the blistering and controlling the itching.

He can still swim. My husband had it a few weeks ago, we found a good site, it said to use dishwashing liquid 4 times a day to wash the oils out that cause the blisters. My husband dried up and cleared up really quick, better than using calamine lotion. Also, Benedryl makes an over the counter cream for the itch that worked really well, just don't give him oral benedryl if you're using the cream. Good luck!

swimmig won't bother it unless he has scratched it and made it raw then it might sting, also would increase chance that he would get bacteria from river in it. Go to Walmart or a drug stor and get a product called Zen-fel It cost a bit but if you follow directions the poison ivy will dry up within a day of so

well, I am not a doc, but I think its a good idea not to try swimming in the river, until he has completely recovered from the symptoms...:)
