I'm going to be moving to China for a year sometime late september to teach english. As a passtime I wanted to possibly document my trip with video and possibly create a documentary on my time there. Would this be a problem with the chinese government or would they even have to know?

G'day ChinaTeacherMark,

Thank you for your question.

It depends on what you are taking video of. If it is sensitive national security areas, they would be very reluctant. If it is something that reflects badly on the Communist Party's rule in modern China, they would be very reluctant - they are likely to interpret this very broadly. If it is the Great Wall of China or other tourist spots, they might not be too concerned.

You might also want to do post-production when you get back.

I have attached some sources for your reference.

Have a great time in China.

Regards

The government probably won't know or care about your efforts unless you do something brazen, like stand in Tianammen filming some provocative protest.

You're just another foreign dude with a handycam until you do something stupid. The Chinese government has its own people to keep in line. You'll just look like a tourist taking pictures. Unless, as I said you do somthing provocative to draw attention to yourself.

You have more to fear from the local busybody who hates foreigners.

More foreigners are stopped taking video by grannies and uncles and aunties with no connection to the government who just thing it's damn wrong for you to video anything.

The government won't care. The police won't care. The PSB and Foreign Affairs Departments in many provinces don't care about what you do with that little handicam camera. If however, it is the kind of big model TV stations use, then you'll definitely have trouble.

Just don't go looking for trouble and you'll be fine.

I wouldn't be talking about this! You need to get permisison. Or you need to keep the entire thing a seceret, which in my point of view is the best thing to do.

ud be better off if you ask them for permission. u don't wanna get arrested for shooting a scene; misunderstandings like threats to the government may arise
