Communication is not just about talking and listening, it is also about body language and gestures.

It is important to re-inforce what you are saying with appropriate body language and to check the person you're talking to really does understand what your saying.

Without effective communcation things could go wrong.

Because when people don't know what others are trying to say, people get mad and become irrational. Like in a marriage, for example, the wife may be mad because her husband came home late last night. Instead of telling her husband why she's mad, she may nag or be rude or just generally cause misery all of which could be avoided if they just talked about the situation. If you didn't know that already, I feel sad for you.

Lets put it like this the english language is difficult... and it's all about understanding what someone said to you!
if you understand then your communication worked! if you didn't understand then and thought you understood what was being said then you could possiable mess up the whole operation! sometimes may just be a simple error some times it could be life threating!
now do you fully understand what i said?

Most obvious, to avoid misunderstanding.
Practically speaking, to receive a good education, [you can't get good grades if your instructor can't understand what you're trying to say], and to succeed in your chosen area of employment.
Politically, to enhance relationships between countries and gain support from your constituents if elected.
