You never have to take your socks off. Sometimes they say you have to take your shoes off, sometimes they just "strongly recommend" that you do. If you're wearing sneakers or other shoes without metal then they usually won't have a problem with you not taking them off. But if you're wearing dress shoes or anything with metal then it's almost certain you will set the metal detector off so it's probably best to take them off.

You don't HAVE to take off your shoes. but if they
set off the metal detector you walk thru then you'll
have to take them off then and run them thru the xray machine.
Almost all mens shoes have a steel "shank" that runs
down the middle of the sole of the shoe and it
sets off the metal detector. Since the guards
no that in advance why waste the time of going thru
the detector, stting it off and then having to go back and put your shoes thru the xray machine.

to go through security they usually recommend you take off your shoes in case there's metal in them that would trip the sensor. If you're actually being seached by security personel they might ask you to remove the socks, but they might not.

I have never had to take off my shoes for airport security. Maybe they only make certain people do this?

Just your shoes so wear slip ons. Also, they will use the wand to check you for metal but should not be able to touch you physically unless they ask to take you to a private room and frisk you (lol).
