I thought about both, and chose to be a police officer.

First, because I get to stay where I am and don't have to move away from my family, friends, and city that I love.

Second, I have more contact with the people that I'm protecting and serving, instead of just sitting in an office building all day.

Third, after putting in my two years in patrol, I was able to make detective, which allows me to do the same type of investigative work and I get to wear the suit and tie, too.

Of course, someone else might not value those things as highly as I do and choose the FBI just because they pay more. Sure, the higher pay would certainly be nice, but I do okay as it is. And I love my job.

Police Officer - they do more in a single day's work to keep you and your family safe than the FBI does all week.

I know regular cops and I know many "special" agents of the Alphabet Agencies (DEA, FBI, INS, etc) and by and large I find the regular street cops to have more compassion, concern and an honest desire to help people than the federal agents. With the exception of a few really good ones, most federal agents I have come into contact with are arrogant, elitist snobs who think everyone else in law enforcemnt is something to be scraped off thier shoes. The street cops do the work, the feds take the credit is how things usually pan out around Seattle, with the exception of the guys and gals from the US Marshal's Service - those folks treat everyone they work with respectfully and are honestly grateful to the help the local cops provide them - unlike the agents from other federal agencies.
