A teddy bear once owned by Elvis Presley has been horribly mangled - by a hound dog.

Barney the guard dog ripped the head from the antique teddy called Mabel after going berserk and savaging more than 100 bears in an exhibition.

The doberman pinscher, who was meant to be guarding the £500,000 collection, went on the rampage after his handler let him off the leash.

He ripped the limbs from many of the helpless bears and left some with "saliva damage", reports the Mirror.

Mabel, the centrepiece of the exhibition at Wookey Hole, Somerset, came off worst. Her head was left hanging by a thread.

Mabel's owner Sir Benjamin Slade, who paid £40,000 for the 1909 teddy at a Memphis auction, was said to be "absolutely furious".

Barney's handler Greg West thinks the hound may have taken revenge on Mabel because he was jealous.
Greg, 36, said: "Barney has been a model guard dog for over six years. He's never done anything like this before"

Only an idiot would let a dog off leash in a room full of stuffed animals that shouldn't be chewed up.

Only an idiot would spend 40,000 pounds on a stuffed toy.

Only an idiot would leave half a million pounds "worth" of stuffed animals out rather than behind glass.

Barney's actions were a cry for help: "Somebody, PLEASE! Get me away from these idiots!"

I heard about it early this morning, it was a great way to start the day with a good laugh. Not funny for the teddy owners but everything else about it just sounds hilarious, even cute! Barney will be remembered for all the wrong reasons lol. He and I share an interest, no fan of elvis! Poor teddies though, alas poor mabel..

1. The dog is not a dobermann (or Reuters got the pictures wrong!) look at the photo in the link attached...
2. The dog must have been seriously stressed. His handler was obviously not very capable of talking care of him very well. So I say yes, give the dog a bone and let his handler get another job - not involved with dogs!

I say Barney is a very bad dobermann (which is not in the hound group) No bone for him, he's had enough fun.
