Good luck.Linux is almost an impossible install.I tried to dual boot with Microsoft but I couldn't get it to work. You might like the program VMware. With VMware you can run Linux while XP is running.Linux runs in a VMware explorer page.

If it's your first time with linux install one of the more well known distros, it will partition your hard drive & install a boot loader, usually grub on your MBR, I always recomend Suse which is easy. When you boot your computer grub will come up first and with the arrow & return keys you can pick which OS to boot into, it adds about 10 seconds to your boot up time. Linux is really easy to install just make sure the bios is set to boot from your CD or DVD drive and insert the linux disk and reboot.

If you have a big enough hard drive, you can partition it then install windows on one partition and Linux on the other than you can choose which to boot from each time you turn on the PC.
