How does a remote control actually work?

The remote has an infrared LED that sends out pulses of invisible light. A photo-diode in the receiver detects these pulses. The pulses are a little like Morse code. If the correct codes are detected, the receiving unit executes your command.

It sends an infrared signal telling the inrared reciever to do what you tell it to do. There is more to it but i dont feel like typing all that.
