I know how to uncheck them and check them, but is there a way to remove them completely from the list?

Yes, they are located in the registry.

Take care when going into your registry, as there's no recycle bin. If you delete it, it's gone for good.

1. Start -> Run, type regedit and hit OK
2. Go to HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\
Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

Anything that you left checked in msconfig will be in this location. Sometimes you will see another folder called -RUN in this same location that contains the items you've unchecked. Not sure if this is the case in Windows XP, but that's how it was in Windows 98.

Also search in the following location:
HKEY_Current_User\Software\
Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
