I also have tried different food, lots of them and I currently have her eating lamb and rice. No beef or corn but hyperallogenic sounds good tho. Thanks kelly c that type of benadryl that says its good to use on her is what i was thinking about using and i know it definitly isnt a long term treatment or cure my intention was just to relive a little of her suffering till i can get her to a decent vet

What do you feed her?

i have an English bulldog with e same problem. He is allergic to Beef and a few other things they put in most dog foods.

i have to feed him a hypoallergenic food - I use Purina H/A, but science diet also makes one.

Unfortunately, you do have to get them from the vet, but its worth a shot.

my dogs problems cleared up within 2 weeks of the new food, after 4 years of skin problems.

Oh, and it was a friend of mine, a vet student, who diagnosed it, three other vets missed it, apparently those studying it now know more.

As for Benadryl, yes you can safely give it to a dog, but not permanently. Dose them like you would a child and you will be fine, but you cannot use it on a dog any longer than you can on a human.

Seriously, try a hypoallergenic food.

do not usesuldodene - sulfodene is a medicine specifically for Hot Spots and will do NO GOOD for dermatitis. There is Sulfur in sulfadene, which kills certain bacteria, but will do no good for dermatitis.

Good Luck

Benadryl is ok for the dog but it has to be Benadryl brand specifically.... My dog had a problem too and the vet told me to use benadryl, my dog also weighs about 60lbs and I believe the dosage was 50 mg but I am not sure it has been a while since I stopped using it because it didnt make a difference. Also I would like to suggest you change your dogs food, because that is what helped my dog... Natural Balance has allergy foods with alternative protein sources like duck and venison... http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/allergy/home.html

Also go here to compare her symptoms with food allergy to see if that is the problem also this site has all kinds of information on skin problems and thier diagnosis and treatment... http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_food_allergies.html

and more info on atopy.. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_inhalant_allergies.html

Most importantly here is some more info on what kind of allergy medicines are okay to use on your pet and you need to make sure the benadryl you buy has ONLY Diphenhydramine and nothing else in it... http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_benadryl.html

And more tips on itch relief.. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_itch_relief.html

PS this is the best site I have found so far that has a list of all kinds of dog problems, thier symptoms and diagnosis techniques and treatment... That way if you need to you acn just go to the vet and tell them what tests to run, and then make them just do it!! Thats what I always do because it seems to be true that most vets are a business and only care about money...so they never treat the problem they just treat the symptoms so you will have to keep coming back!! So if you know what condition your dog might have just go order the vet to do as you say and make sure to have knowledge of the illness so they cant lie to you!!

It will not hurt her at all. Ive done it before. You can use sulfodene or give her the benadryl and put some antibiotic ointment on her and dont let her lick it for a little while after doing it so it will have some time to absorb and work. Dont listen to the people that say u cant give them benadryl. They obvisouly have no experience or gave there pet too much which leads back to no experience. lol

My 70 lb takes 2 25 mg.

If she is on Heartworm preventative see if you can get revolution from your vet that you purchased the preventative. You apply it like frontline but is a treatment for mites if they are not scraping to see if she has them.

Have they given her any medicated/moisturizing shampoos? If she has any exposed skin get some cortizone spray from any petsmart and spray that area. Make sure she is getting plenty of fluids and put a little cod liver oil over her food. Be sure her food is mainly meat and not corn. Corn causes serious allergies like this. Hope all goes well.

On the contrairy to what everyone else says - You CAN give your dog benedryl. There are alot of things (medicines) that they cannot have but benedryl is safe. I am a dog owner/breeder. I also do my own grooming and the vet suggested benedryl to calm them when I do my grooming. You can give benedryl at 25mg per 15 pounds of body weight or up to 50mg. If this does not help, call the vet clinic and tell them what your dog weighs and what is going on. They may can suggest a different does of benedryl based on the breed of your dog and they may can give you something for him/her w/o the visitation fee. Good Luck!

I had a dog w/skin issues similar to that. He couldn't even rest at night he was so restless. Actually my vet put him on valium, and it worked! He was much calmer, and didn't scratch near as much. I think a small amount of Benadryl would definitely help. Might make him drowsy, so I would give the dose in the evening. (just like for a kid)

My westie had dermatitis and my vet recomended a Childs dosage of bynadrly. and he was a little thing. And try to find you a vet that cares about you and your dog. But dogs can NOT have anythings that human's can. but a small dosage of bynadryl will not hurt. Good Luck!

also try Bathing her with selsum blue. with cool (not hot) water. about once a week until cleared up. Then just when ever she needs it.

Have you gone to only one vet, or a few of them? Because if you have only gone to one I would suggest trying somewhere else. If you don't want to make a visit to the vet you may also be able to call and ask them if it is ok to give your dog Benadryl, they should be able to tell you that over the phone.

Bnyaryl will not hurt a dog, I've tried it and found it didn't help in my situation. I changed my dogs food ( can be allergies) and to try and eliminate corn and wheat from her diet I combined that with a natural vitamin and after about 3 weeks she still scratchs but not anyway like she did. never developed any hot spots her skin color has returned to normal

That is probably what she has. Giving the dog Benadryl will not hurt her in any way as long as you do not give her too much. The amount that you are giving her seems fine,
Good Luck and hope your dog feels better.
