Okay -- a lot of misinformation in the answers you've been given. Gingivitis is reversable. You can fix it. It's periodontal disease (this is the next stage up from gingivitis) that isn't curable, and can just be 'controlled'.

Bleeding gums with gingivitis is perfectly normal.

What causes gingivitis can be from a number of factors. Usually it is because of poor hygiene. What happens is that you accumulate plaque on your teeth. Plaque is a soft build-up that is usually tooth-colored and difficult to visually notice. If it is not properly removed it calcifies on your enamel, much like salt or sugar gets hard when you pour water into it. (That is what they are scraping off your teeth at cleanings.) This hardened plaque is referred to as 'tartar' or 'calculus'.

When you develop calculus below your gum line it causes your gums to become inflamed because blood is rushing to the surface of your gums to fight off the bacteria that is collected in the tartar. (This is what causes gingivitis.)

The only way to fix it is to keep brushing and FLOSSING! You should be brushing at LEAST twice a day and flossing once a day.

The generally accepted *correct* way to brush is to place your toothbrush on the biting surface of your teeth, and rotate it 45 degrees either inward or outward (depending on if you are brushing in the insides or outsides of your teeth) and brush in small ovular strokes -- at least 10-12 rotations for each set of 2-3 teeth. Brushing your teeth should take you at least 2 minutes. You want to be brushing at a 45 degree angle to the axis of your teeth (gumline) so that when you are brushing you can feel the brush 'tickling' your gumline. When you brush at an angle like this the brush can clean more of the build-up that you have at the gum-line which is causing the inflammation and bleeding.

When you are brushing your front teeth, flip the brush vertical and brush up and down in short strokes. Your tooth brush cannot clean it properly if you continue to hold it horizontally to clean front teeth.

Here is a website that has some diagrams to better illustrate what I am saying:

http://www.dentist.net/proper-brushing.asp

An antibacterial mouthwash like Listerine (don't get the yellow-ish colored one, it tastes horrible!) or Crest Pro-Health would work great. Crest Pro-Health has no alcohol in it so that you don't get that burning after taste. I've used it and love the taste!

One person suggested Chlorhexadine Gluconate rinses, however you can only get this with a prescription from your dentist or from the dentist directly. (Although it is a great product!)

You should make sure to use a toothpaste (and I'm not sure if Colgate Total has this or not...) that has fluoride in it. This will help prevent the cavities that the bacteria in your mouth and plaque buildup can cause. There are also fluoridated mouth washes like Act that might help to prevent cavities as well.

Also, I understand that you are a 'poor college student' with no money and you can't afford the dentist. But you need to get a professional cleaning as soon as possible. You cannot remove calculus/tartar with brushing or flossing, only a dental hygienist can do that for you. Your gingivitis may not go away completely untill you get a cleaning.

If you want to try and find somewhere where you can get one at a discount, or even possibly free, consider researching schools (colleges) in your area that have dental hygiene programs (for students who want to become a dental hygienist, I mean). Oftentimes they will have clinics and will do cleanings for people like yourself at little or no cost. It's usually a very thorough cleaning since they usually have an instructor standing over their shoulder!

Blessings and Luck!

Keep brushing even though it bleeds. Brush 3 times a day.
Brush each tooth carefully and take a really long time. The front and back of each tooth. Also learn to floss. Floss once or twice a day. Your gums will recover. Paying attention to keeping your teeth clean with brushing and flossing is the only cure. make it a priority or you will get gum disease and lose your teeth.

YOU MUST SEE A Dentist. Unless you want to loose all your teeth?
Tea Tree Oil does wonders. You can get Vitamin shop Brand. Its strong but kills all germs on the gum. Oh yeah Peroxide. gargle mornings and noons. see label for instructions.. YOu 'll have your gum back in no time. Of course use extra soft tooth brush. Remember you are fighting the germs so brush often to keep your mouth clean so germs can not feed upon the left over food in your mouth. Other things to try; lemon juice, vinegar, clove oil is very good for stopping the bleeding, Let me know how is it going o.k. wishing you well.

You have to go to the dentist. And you have to floss every day. It will hurt and bleed at first, but it really must be done. My husband was starting to develop this and that's what the dentist told him to do, plus he has to get his teeth cleaned every 3 months by the dental hygeinst. They also told him to rinse with Listerine, not any other brand, twice a day for at least 30 seconds at a time.

P.S.-Don't brush your gums, brush your teeth along the gum-line, but not your gums.

Get yourself a Waterpik. I got one to help clean between my teeth because food gets stuck so easily and I hated that sensation. What I didn't realize is how much healthier my gums have become since using it. After two years, there is practically no plaque under my gum line. My dentist says I'll have my original teeth til they put me into my grave. The pulsating irrigation really stimulates the gums as well as shooting out debri from between teeth and you'll notice how great you'll feel all over after using it (not just your mouth). You're gums will never know gingivitis again. Google it if you want to buy online. I got mine at Macy's. About $40.

the reason your gums are bleeding is because you have build up behind your teeth, I had the same problem and I went to the denist and had my teeth cleaned and they gave me a oral rinse called "Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.12%" I use it twice a day morning and night. and it has helped me. No more bleeding gums. I also was useing the same toothpast as you. My dentist also told me to keep brushing even though my gums were bleeding, that it was good for them. hope that helps you.

Brushing two times day for two minutes and flossing everyday will help. Going to the dentist to have your teeth professionally cleaned needs to be done.

floss every day - it's going to take a couple of weeks to notice improvement. while it's true that you should stimulate your gums you want to be careful and gentle - use a gentle upward stroke when you brush - think massage, not scrub! also, see if there is a dental school or technical school offering reduced rates in your area. they are very well supervised and can let you know what's really going on in your mouth.
