My nuclear family consisted of my parents and 4 children. I never considered that small or large, but rather average in size.
My extended family, however, is very large. My dad was the oldest of 6 children, and my mother was the youngest of 11. I have 50 first cousins, and over a hundred first cousins once removed. (First cousins once removed are the children of my first cousins.) There are times when it seems that I am related to everyone in our county, either through marriage or blood.
I'm the youngest of the cousins on my mother's side. My oldest cousin on that side is 37 years older than I am.

By today's standard, it would be considered large, but when I was a kid it was a norm. I have two brothers, and one sister. My grand parents, had 7 and 8 kids, you don't see that much anymore.
