On the day of Pentecost in Acts the Disciples were given the Holy Spirit and all of them spoke in a Language that those on the Street understood, even though they did not speak the same language. There is a Utterance one can receive from The Holy Spirit as evidence of receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, this is not the gift of Tongues. But a Utterance between the Holy Spirit and you. The Gift of tongues comes later to some , and there is always an interpreter there.

Everybody as tongues is mearly languages. Everybody spoke at least two or three languages but the gift of tongues I am sure you are referring to only those that was needful of it actually got the gift and that was for spreading the Gospel, not for making a show that you have the Holy Spirit as it is used for today and it is not a language but babbling. Many studies have been done by those that know languages and there is no intelligable language spoken but just some babble.
