Does anyone have any alternative ideas to a baby shower? Have you heard of an 'un-shower'? Where people are asked to send a gift, but only family is actually invited to attend an event? I don't want to deal with the drama of a baby shower, but this is my first baby and we need so many things...

People do like to gift a baby, but I think its disrepectful to ask for things without some sort of party or visit. The drama is only as much as you make it. Just buy food and drink and take pictures of your guests with you. No need for games and diaper pins and crap.

I have heard of frozen-meal-a-thons where friends bring you loads of food to stock up for after baby arrives. Also instead of gift baby showers, book baby showers are a great way, if you don't want things. Everyone knows a children's book that means something special.

I didn't have a baby shower and people still sent gifts to me. I was in the middle of a move so it wasn't really possible. I don't really think it's right to expect gifts when no shower is thrown though. Instead of a baby shower just have a big get together, invite anyone you want to friends or family, grill some burgers and just talk with everyone...and if you get gifts, you get gifts. A baby shower doesn't need to be all about playing goofy games. I do think it's VERY rude to have this "un-shower" just think about it:
Dear Friend,
I am not having a baby shower but I'd like some gifts because I need things for the new baby so could you please send me something? Thank you-

Seriously, you should just have the shower. It is rude to expect gifts and not have a party for recognition. I know they are sort of cheesy, but just remember, these people are spending their hard earned money in honor of your baby. It's actually a really nice gesture on their behalf. Don't be that way. Besides, you will probably have a really good time! I'm 7 months pregnant and I am having 2 showers. Some ladies at my work want to throw me one and my fiance's mom wants to throw one for the family. If anything, have 2! It would be way too crowded if I wanted to have friends and family at my shower, but it would be rude to not have one at all. If anything - have 2. Good luck and God Bless!

You need stuff honey...suck it up...dont' be rude...just have a shower already...

I totally know where you're coming from...I didn't really want one either...so I told the girl throwing it to just have a party (like a co-ed party) so my hubby could go too...and of course she didn't and we're having a lame fancy tea party or some such crap and that is TOTALLY not me...but whatever...I'm putting on a happy face and going to the stupid thing just for the presents...lol.. I need EVERYthing...it's our first baby too...

Just think of it as one of the many many sacrifices you'll have to make as a parent. :)

Good luck and congratulations.

If you really don;t need anything...have a party and ask people to bring the gifts and donate them to a local crisis pregnancy center...or take up a collection for your favorite children's charity.
