What is the best way for him to prepare/study to take the test? He has about an eighth grade education, and has a lot of problems with reading & writing comprehension. He is alright in math, science, etc... I want to help him out by buying books, or a program to study from, what would be a good way to get him started?

If his reading isn't up to par, start him out with a "Hooked on Phonics" or similar reading primer. It may sound silly, but improving your reading skills makes studying for the GED so much easier. Once he's got his reading skills going, there are books available that will help prepare for the GED. They'll have reading lists, practice tests and helpful suggestions. It's not going to happen overnight, or in a week. Expect 3 to 6 months of intense learning (remember, he's trying to catch up on at least 4 years of schooling) to get ready. And if you don't succeed the first time, you can go back and try again.

Local Community Colleges offer free classes to prepare for your GED. Check into those.

Go to a bookstore and look in education. There should be books that you can get. Or goto your local library and check educational books out. That should help you some.

most places will require you to enroll in a mini-school for preparing for the test. for his age and time out of school I believe this would be his best bet. you can go to your local community college or YMCA or library and they can better point you to where these places are.
