Beijing is a city, which means it has crime, but so does everywhere.

Comparing to other cities that I have visited all over the world, Beijing is consider one of the safest cities. There is a reason for this:

Beijing is the political center of China. That would mean more police force, more army troops.

Petty crimes like pick pocket is quite common. Just watch out for your valuables.

Being the capital and where the Olympics are going to be in a couple of years - it is relatively safe compared to many other large cities in China. (Shenzhen, Wuhan). Govt is very conscious of any bad publicity for Beijing so there's plenty of police presence seen around the city, especially in tourist areas. Places like Shenzhen down south can be very dangerous.

Just as anywhere else is safe. There used to be a lot of people who mugged you but now it is a lot better. Best thing is not to use a purse but buy one of those big bags with a side zipper to keep your money in. Then it's fine.

The most 'not safe' thing would be the cars. Its not that they're crazy, but there's just so much. You really have to be careful of where you walk.

Other than that, it is much safer than the US....where anybody could buy a gun/knife and kill you in anyplace....

beijing is really safe, just beware of the normal pety crimes like pick pockets..but that's mainly in touristy places...i've never had an issue while living there....i actually love the city, and feel much safer there than i do in many cities in the states.

It is very safe. Just don't do stupid things like leave your purse/wallet hanging out for anyone to grab. I was alone, blonde, 21yr old when I went and nobody bothered me. Only this man wanted a picture with me so he sort of brushed his hand on my bum when the picture was being taken. I was in shock!
