this is how its supposed to go:
God is
(1) the father
(2) the son
(3) the holy spirit
We are
(1) a soul (our mind)
(2) flesh and blood
(3) alive (if you beleive it) through the spirit of God
That is, we are three parts in the same package.
In the same way God is three parts in the same package.

It doesn't literally mean that we physicaly look like God, because we cannot, God is a spirit. Being made in God's image means that we have his qualities.
If someone says that you are "an image of loyalty" it doesn't mean that you look like loyalty, loyalty is an attribute. Same thing goes for your question.

God created us to have the same spirit, reasoning power,attributes that he has.We had freedom of choice...to obey or not to obey.Jesus said that whoever saw him saw the father. If you wanted to know what God was like, to look at him and how he acted. We have the ability to love others.we are to have love,joy,peace,patience,kindness,goodness,gentleness and self control.All these things make us have the image of God.Unfortunately,not all of us develop what is there.My hope is that when I meet God face to face he will see those things in me which make me like him.God bless your day.

I believe that it was our souls that were made in the image of God. If our physical bodies were made in the image of God than why don't they go to heaven as well as our souls? Also, I am a believer in evolution (science and religion go hand in hand in my book) and I know that God doesn't look like bacteria which science dictates we started out as in the evolutionary scale.
