I am looking into purchasing a camcorder that records onto mini DVDs, so it would be convenient if I could just play them on my DVD player instead of having to hook up the camera to watch them.

Yes, it is possible to play mini dvds on a standard player. The one problem that you have is that you must have the same format. For example, in the old days, you couldn't play metal cassettes on a regular cassette deck. Same idea here. If your minidisk records on dvd-rw and your standard dvd only accepts wami, midi, or dvd+, then the data will be unrecognizable and you will need to get a different player. Just make sure that you have the same type of format. Also, make sure that you have the correct line on the larger player. When dvds first came out, there was a little indentation in the middle of the larger hole to accept minidisks. You are going to need that smaller indentation so that the disks line up correctly.

As for actual brand names of players, I suggest you start with Panasonic and Yamaha. They both make excellent players. Otherwise, If you are looking to go a little bit cheaper, you could go with a Sony Playstation 2 or 3 / Sony Playstation Portable type format. I know that they can read multiple formats.

Whatever you choose, I hope you find what you are looking for.

You can as long as

1) your DVD Player has a groove in the try for it
(eject and look to see if there is a small groove on the tray the size of the mini DVD)
2) The DVD has been closed (most dvd players cant play DVDs unless they have been "Closed" this means made so no further writing to the disk is possiable
3) If the mini-dvd is a DVD-R or DVD-RW your dvd player will have to support this technology (most newer ones do).

You don't say how you burned the disk. Video DVDs should be burned in a specific format (UDF). They also need the folder structure and file names to be correct (the same as the original disk). As Rugratzzz said, computers can be more forgiving, as can the cheaper supermarket DVD players. If you've got something like a Sony or Panasonic player they tend to stick to the standards. I'm sure there's a way of burning DVDs on a Mac, but I'm not a Mac user - sorry.

yes, you know that little groove where the regular sized DVD goes? ;)
That's where the mini ones go.
At least it's that way on mine.
