Since you're asking about what gift to give, I'm sure your first choice is not money. A lot of times couples will already have between them a good bit of what they'd need, so stay away from anything you think they already have. Don't get items if you don't know whether or not they suit their decor/colors. I would definitely go with a gift card to a place like Bed, Bath, and Beyond or somewhere similar.
Or, you can scrap all that and ask your aunt or other relative close to her what she needs or wants most.

I am in my mid 20s and getting married. I have a registry but a good gift is anything they will use. Don't get them sentimental stuff. I means its cool and everything but not that practical. We registered for stuff we would use. I don't know your budget but a good camera is always a good gift. Money is practical. A gift certificate to IKEA would be awesome. There is a store in Houston they could go to. Anything from the IKEA store would be cool. If you haven't had a chance to check it out its bad ***. Some things are pricey ans some things are reasonable. Bottom line is get them something you know they would want and use on a very regular basis.

I find that a gift card to a restaurant or movie theater is a nice gift. You can order a card with a gift card inserted from http://www.usps.com/netpost/stayintouch.htm?from=netpostlanding&page=stayintouch . I have used their services for a couple years and the cards are only a few dollars and postage only the price of a stamp. These are the gift cards you can choose from:

Gift cards in denominations from $25 to $200 are available for these popular retailers*:

AMC Theatres®
Bahama Breeze®
Barnes & Noble
Bass Pro Shops®

The answer is usually cash. It really does help a couple setting up home. Also, since they do not have a registry, that's "bridal speak" for please send cash, without actually saying it.

If you still want to get a present, do NOT get the following:

Candle sticks
Candles
Picture Frames
Anything engraved

Preferences will run to the following:

Really nice sheets
Kitchen wares that are non-electric (i.e. nice knives, luxury mixing bowls, etc etc)
Gift certificates
Luxury towels in white

No registry? that sucks! Gift card to any store like bed bath & beyond (it has it all)...try asking them what they need. If nothing then just get them a card and put money in it so they can spend it when they are on their honeymoon. that's always very nice to have, extra spending cash!

I registered for nice picture frames to put our wedding pictures in. I am really hoping I get those, or get a nice silver frame engraved with their wedding date(times remember does a nice job with that). I know everyone says money, and yes money is good. But as a bride to be, i will cherish those gifts which came from the heart.

Give them something they can use. They are starting their life and can use a lot I bet. Find out what kind of kitchen patterns they use and buy them more to match or find out what they are needing. Picture frames and candles get put into keepsafe boxes and rummage sales eventually. If they have all of the things they need give them cash, they can use it to pay a bill or get something nice they would like. Or maybe a gift card or two tickets into disney world. lol

Gift cards and money are always great! We got a lot of gift cards for resaurants and stores. We did get cash but it was easy to just spend it on anything. When you give a gift card to a restaurant it forces them to go out to eat together.

if they don't have a registry, they more than likely want cash. if they plan on becomeing new homeowners, a gift card to menards(or the local home improvement store) is a great idea!

i've also given wind chimes or bird feeders to newleyweds.. something they can use year round.

Money,
they can use it for the honeymoon, towards a new house, or even things they will need. This way you can count on the money going to something they want, instead of duplicate gifts then having to exchange.
