Is it because they don't care/want to participate, or is it because adults prevent them from having an authentic voice?

Teenagers have the same opportunities to voice their opinions as adults except for the right to vote. They can speak at public meetings and form agendas for towns. Heck, one teen in high school is the mayor of a town (Michigan, I think)! The only thing holding most teens back is themselves.

teens can participate in many ways...but most don't i myself was total oblivious to politics while in my teens.... but if you are old enough to have a job you are old enough to have a voice...just use your money for Bribes...er...I mean PAC contributions.... that's what most political active adults do if you don't believe me google abramhof. I don't think the drinking and partying and sex has a lot of relevance because many adults engage in sex and drinking and party all night long but still vote...hell some even get elect to office. our president is a former alcoholic and posible coke-head

Part of it is that you may not have a full grasp on civic participation.

I mean, if you are more concenred about going to raves, dropping ecstacy and shagging in cars, what do you really care about Darfur?

When you are of an age when maturity should have kicked in (18), then you can play along.

This is what I think. I am just starting my family. I don't care how smart and intelligent a teen is and if they stay away from the drugs and parties, until you are on your own you have no idea what is really going on and there is really no way to learn it until you experiance. That is just the way it is.

I think that both apply. Most teenagers are so self absorbed they don't care about anything except themselves and a lot of adults don't think that "kids" have anything important to say or contribute.

the rest of society doesn't take us seriously...hmm, i wonder why?

it takes just a few bad apples to ruin it for the bunch

if more teens would veer away from the partying, drinking, sex, drugs, etc. maybe our opinions on serious matters would count for more

until teens take like a little more seriously, society is always going to tell us what we need to do, what's best for us...blah blah blah

Most of them are to ignorant or idealistic to do any good. What you would get is a bunch of anti war hippies trying to free animals that they eat for dinner anyway.
