We loved it so much! The people were very friendly (both the many natives as well as the many British tourists we met). Everything was really clean. The food was healthful and fresh, especially the fish and vegetables. We liked the museums and historical sites. Amsterdam was also extremely safe. We wandered around various streets at all times of the day and night without any trouble at all. We went to many different kinds of eateries and the service was always fast, efficient and cordial. Prices for food, clothes and souveniers were reasonable. I highly recommend a visit.

I really liked Amsterdam. I lived in Germany for a semester in college and on weekends we traveled all over the place. Basically it's a night train to get there from Stuttgart or Munich, Germany which is the general area I was coming from. It was actually one of my last weekends I was in Europe and since my roommate bailed on me, I went by myself b/c I really wanted to go.
I only spent a day and a half there, but I could have stayed longer. The best place to stay is the Flying Pig Hostel (it's famous...I would suggest reservations - www.hostelworld.com), it's close to most things. There's a tram that runs through the city that's not expensive - it's the best way to get around. The best part is that people there speak English. I mean, the locals speak Dutch, but a lot of people in the city either speak fluent English as well or is a tourist to begin with. I never felt unsafe. Best things to do there are to see the Anne Frank Haus, the VanGogh Museum and the Heineken Brewery (you get 3 free beers and a free gift and the tour and all the interactive stuff is very cool.)
I'm sure you know marijuana is legal there - you can walk into any coffee shop and buy whatever you want and smoke it there, or in most of the hostel common areas...I think they frown on you just wandering the streets smoking a joint, but I could be wrong. There's also a place where you can get "special brownies" if you're into those kinds of things. They even have maps that tell you exactly where to go.
Because I was by myself I didn't go into the red light district so I can't talk about that, but I would have if I was there with someone else. I heard it's crazy. There are drugs and sex shows and hookers and whatever, but I've been told that if you don't show any interest in whatever they're involved in they won't harass you, but I don't know that firsthand.
If you're going there, have fun! I'm jealous!

I used to live in The Netherlands and it's a beautiful place! When you're in Amsterdam, make sure you take a boat ride on the canal! It's really fun! Also, a fun place to eat is Hard Rock Cafe...email me if you want to know anything else :)

It's a very lovely city to visit. There's a lot of history and culture there. My favorite was the Anne Frank house and museum. Just remember that many museums in Europe are closed on Mondays.

It's the best place to go for a first-time European
visit, it's cheap and everyone speaks English.

I stayed at the Botel (combination boat and hotel)
on the Amstel River across from the train station.
It wasn't great, but it was cheap! I actually saw
St. Nicholas on a barge outside my window!
He looks like Santa Clause, only with a white
suit!

I've been several times, and it's soooo fun. There is so much to do whatever your interests. I don't smoke the chronic, but it's crazy there with all there cafe's that you can buy it and smoke it. You have to go to the red light district too, with the women it the doorways its like nothing I've ever seen. There is tons of shopping which is what I love to do. You can also visit Anne Frank's home where she hid in the attic. It used to be super cheap there before they switched to the Euro, but now it's more expensive.

My first couple of visits I was all about the drugs. I've since been back (being drug-free), and find it to be a beautiful, charming, exciting city. The people are friendly, there's lots of good theatre and music all the time, great museums, easy to get around in. Day trips outside the city are great, too.
