I have a beautiful 6 year old chow/terrier mix named princess. My fiance and I adopted her from the SPCA about 3 years ago. She has been wonderful!!! Great with kids, perfectly potty trained, great manners, learns new things, just a god send. Anyway about 4-5 months ago out of the blue she has started to have accidents in the house and started chewing things. At first we brushed it off that is was an accident but it became a daily thing. One of us can take her out and she will potty and pee and we can leave for 30 min and come back and she will have had an accident. We aren't sure what to do. We took her to the vet to see if she has a bladder infection but nope she's good. I need help any ideas to help her out. We lover her to death and I can tell this is really bothering her too. When we come home she cowers and looks so sad (we would NEVER lay a hand on her so it breaks my heart to see her cower like that) please any advice would be wonderful!!

It's a good idea to put her in the bathroom with her bed and toys and food and water etc. we tried that and she went ape **** in the bathroom! Even tore some of the molding off from around the door! It was crazy how strong she is....just so everyone knows we didn't yell at her for it she was probably scared of being locked in there, we were more mad at ourselves for doing it.....

Maybe she is remembering her puppy days which were bad. Just help her get through this with the help of newspaper and if you leave lock her in the bathroom with a bed and water.

perhaps she needs some more positive reinforcement with the potty training.
our pup is 7 months and he started having accidents a week or two ago, so for us, it's easy..he just needs some more work in the training department.
however, for your dog...at that age...i would seek out another vet and get a second opinion. it has to be a physical problem if a dog suddenly, after 6 years, starts having accidents like that. i've experienced many vets and i can tell you that some like the house pets and some are more interested in the big animals...so, maybe your vet isn't as thorough as they should be...

i hope everything works out and gets better! maybe it's not a bladder infection, but something else.

take care!

The only thing I can think is to ask if she might be upset for some reason. Do you have a new child or did you get a new dog. I know that when my son was born my britanny started to do that, but after a while she got over it and now actually "babysits" my son, like when he is sleeping and I am napping when my son wakes up my dog will come and wake me up, Its kinda funny. Some times a new puppy or new pet of anykind can make dogs jealus also. You just have to show the older dog that you still care and give it plenty of love also.

Is there any reason for her to be upset with you? Sometimes when dogs get mad or upset with you they will go to the bathroom indoors just to show you she is upset. Has she been spayed?? alot of times female dogs that have been spayed have trouble controling their bladder when they get older. Our dog is just a year old and has accidents in her sleep. The vet said it was common for dogs not to be able to control it if they had been spayed, just usually in older dogs. Try training her to puppy pads or a doggie litter box.

I would suggest taking her to the vet, I've been told when a dogs behavior suddenly changes there may be something wrong. If there is nothing wrong, your vet should be able to give you suggestions on what to do to help correct the problem.

Have you had her cked for diabetes? My InLaws dog started having accidents in the house, and they took her in and had her tested. She had it.

Hope that is not it, but it might be something to look into...better safe than sorry.

Good luck with your Princess!
