Is it weird to be so attached to your family dog, that when you had to put him to sleep at 5 years old from cancer to still be upset and cry about it months later, plus we have a new puppy, so he kinda reminds me of my old dog.

it is not strange at all to feel that way. Dogs, or pets of any kind, can nuzzle their way into you hearts to the point of seeing them as a child or relative. Most of them are part of the family and not just 'the dog'... I don't know what I will do with myself when my dogs need to be put to sleep.. But for a little bit of comfort for you, You did the right thing for him. You ended the suffering, and know that he is grateful for what you did. Just keep him in your heart and mind forever. Obviously he was a great dog or you wouldn't be missing him the way you do. Keep him alive through your memories, and love this little puppy as much as you loved him! Best of luck to you, and my appologies for your loss. *hugs to you and your puppy*

My heart goes out to you. Our Golden Retriever, our baby was 11 years old when she got bone cancer and we had to put her to sleep. We were a mess for months and months. Our other dog was in morning for six months. We went to the animal shelter after six months and got the cutest Lahasa. Our dog fell in love with her immediately. Two years now and they are best of friends. I thank my retriever all the time for sending us the LaHasa. I cry once in a while but then I look at our new bundle of joy and cheer up.

No, it's not strange at all. Dogs become a part of the family so that it's more like losing a brother or sister than losing a pet.

Sorry for your loss...lost my rotti, that I bottle feed, on June 29th of this yr. It is totally normal to grieve even yrs later...you loved your pet. Don't people cry over a lost member of the family?!

Just remember, your new puppy IS NOT your old dog...he may remind you of your old one, but it is not fair to him to compare! (Husband expects our 6 month old Great Dane to be the dog that our 11 yr old Rotti was!)
Love your puppy as you did your old dog, but even more...he is depending on you!

No, that's not weird at all. Our first dog died tragically after we'd only had him for a year, about five years ago. Frankly, I don't think my husband has ever really gotten over it and we still get a little teary-eyed when we talk about him. He was a very special dog.

No not at all just think of your dog in a happier place and make the best of your puppy so if you have to ever say good bye you can always think of the good times. and talk to your old dog like he was there.I'm sorry

it's not strange at all!
my pup is only 7 months old and i get teary just thinking about the fact that eventually he will die and i won't have my little boy anymore!
he really is like our son and you get attached to the little buggers, even when they have your t-shirt in their mouth and are running around the house like "haha. i got it and you can't get it from me...sucker!!!".

hang in there, what you're feeling is normal and in time, like everything else, it'll get better:)

take care.
