Thats because you have waited until the last minute. Airfares go up in August for the fall when airtravel slows down. Roundtrip is ALWAYS cheaper than one ways. No website is cheaper than the other. You can actually book with the airlines themselves and find better deals and avoid connections and booking fee's. Tell me your city pairs and dates I'll let you know where to get the best deal. You've missed out on the deeply discounted fares and you are looking at everyone returning from vacation and kids going back to school/college.

Websites like Priceline, Cheap Tickets, Hotwire, Lowestfare....any of these "discount" websites are traps. They charge rediculous booking fee's do not offer the best schedules and you dont know what you are getting until after you purchase the fare. You CAN NOT make any changes and the airlines will not touch these tickets if there are any problems. Orbitz is owned by the airlines and their fares are comparable to what the airlines are offering minus the booking fee's. Check there first and then go to the airlines websites. Southwest and Jet Blue do not participate in these sites, so check with them directly. Again, e-mail me your city pairs and dates and I'll see what I can find for you. Im a former ticket/gate agent for a major US airline and know a few back doors to finding good deals.

Ive used Kayak, Booking Buddy, Sidestep and Ifly247.com and I still have yet to find better fares than what most airlines have on their websites.

Try Yahoo Travel. They offer an option called Fare Chase once you input all your information such as travel dates and cities it will search the most popular websites such as those directly from the airline as well as Orbitz, Travelocity etc. Try it, use the following link.

Hello, I try to avoid these websites:

www.orbitz.com
www.Expedia.com
www.cheaptickets.com
www.cheapflights.com
www.priceline.com
www.lowestfare.com
www.cheapseats.com
www.Travelocity.com
www.ShermansTravel.com

because they usually have the same prices and slightly higher price than the airlines. I only use them for price comparison.

Try booking your flights way in advance or wait for fare specials.
