Definitely Crystal City because it has a wider (and recently growing) variety of interesting restaurants on Crystal Drive. They have renovated the area for a more above-ground pedestrian-friendly feel, and that has brought a lot of new eateries there. You can't go wrong with Jose Andres' tapas places on Crystal Drive: Jaleo (Spanish) and Oyamel (Mexican). There is a new Thai restaurant there that I've never tried. Plus don't forget the more eclectic stretch of restaurants in older storefronts along 23rd Street just west of Eads Street (which has restaurants such as Thai Smile, Freddie's Beach Bar, Bonsai Grill, Portofino, etc.).

While I don't care for Pentagon City (the mall), the Pentagon Row mixed-use development behind it has some good and interesting places to eat - Thaiphoon, Lebanese Taverna, Sine Irish Pub, etc.

Crystal City. There are new, great restaurants...many of which have ties to well-known DC restaurants (without the traffic problems....at least sometimes). You can really eat good quality food in Crystal City.

Though Pentagon City has the new Pentagon Row group of restaurants, they are not of the same caliber as those in Crystal City.

I really like the restaurants in the Pentagon City area, but not inside the mall. Walk around to the back of the mall, and there are some great little places.

Also, if you're already on the metro, check out Clarendon and Court House. Some amazing restaurants and bars around there! Really nice areas.
