I use to volunteer as a tutor for elementary school kids. Truthfully, it wasn't a very good experience because none of the kids even wanted to try and learn to read. They just stared at the wall while I tried my best to explain how to sound out words. I guess that's what happens when schools shove problem students off on high school volunteers.

Back when I was religious, I was in a church band at my church and lead the youth group's song session at another church...it was fun, but I just like singing so I didn't really view is as volunteer work.

Not too long ago, I tried volunteering again with my college to teach architecture at a middle school. The kids at that school were a lot more excited about learning than those from my previous experience, so that was very enjoyable. I hope to have time to help with that this year too.

I volunteer with the Special Olympics and ARC. I don't expect anything in return but I do receive something in return. The people I work with and help are the kindest, gentlest people who freely give love and it makes one very happy to be around them.

Yes. It feels great, because I gave it out of my own will. I didn't expect anything in returned.
Think about it.

Yes, I spend hours and hours educating the poor misguided fools who wander aimlessly through the caverns of Yahoo answers seeking wisdom from fellow lost souls.

It feels good to help those retched humanoids.

One little funny thing I like to do is wash my neighbor's front door mat when I'm doing mine in the laundry....she's right across the hallway and has one of those fluffy white mats that get dirty pretty easily. I always wait until I know she's gone, wash and dry it, and put it back. It's all white and fluffed up again. I don't think she has ever noticed, but it give me lots of joy and makes me giggle.

Yes, it feels good. Modesty is a depressing lifestyle, but it feels great when you're finally recognized for your actions. Even if there's no real compensation.

True happiness was the result. Depression is always the result of me trying to make myself feel happy.
