Constantine ... the emperor of Rome converted to Christianity. He gave the Christians places to worship in . And he helped to "organize" the Church. That was the beginning of a lot of the erroneous beliefs in the Roman Catholic Church. I like to say that Constantine Christianized the pagans and paganized the Christians. Many say that he himself was a mixture of both. It had a good side in that it put an end to the persecution of the Christians. But it also caused them to make many compromises that are still with us today as in the Nicene Creed and Church Doctrines that he "insisted on."

Very simple. Henrick Sienckiewicz, in his book " Quo Vadis" talked about that. In the book, Saint Peter asked Jesus why did He wanted to build His belief in that city, where the first Christians were thrown to the lions. Later Peter realized that, in the city of Rome, capital of the Roman Empire, which was the same as saying the capital of the ancient world, Christianity would build the foundations of the new world, after the Roman Empire fell in 476.
It took four centuries of bloodshed, martyrdom and suffering, but finally the cult to the pagan gods was eliminated and Christianity became the basis of the civilization, with the Vatican within the city, as the Pope says in his blessing, the same since Saint Peter: "Urbi et Orbi"

The three (non-Jewish) Magi visiting the baby Jesus was one of the first signs that Christianity would be catholic (universal) and reach out to the entire world.

Later Jesus treated non-Jews like Romans and Samaritans with dignity and respect. In consequence, these Romans and Samaritans became some of the first Christians.

After Jesus' Resurrection, more and more Gentiles became believers and the Apostles decided under the influence f the Holy Spirit that they did not have to convert to Judaism to become Christians.

The Catholic Church has referred to itself as the “Catholic Church” at least since 107 AD, when the term appears in the writings of St. Ignatius of Antioch.

All of this was long before the Council of Nicea and the Nicene Creed from 325 A.D. which states, "We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church."

With love in Christ.

Roman empire was getting divided, there were many religious sects and Christianity was becoming increasingly popular. It was new, mysterious, promoted peacefulness and it didn't exclude anybody. Basically, Roman emperor saw opportunity to join the whole empire under one common religion and in that way strengthen the country (it's still done today by politicians and religious leaders all over the world). They mixed it with pagan religion practises to make it more appealing to barbarian tribes and of course, where else than Rome, center of Roman empire and power, should become center of this new, fantastic, religion? This is "worldly" explanation and I hope it makes sense to you.

It's possible to win a battle and lose the war.

Publically executing Christians in the arena made many more people aware of Christianity and when the audience saw brave heroic martyrs, they began to wonder what this Christianity thing was all about.
