There are scanners specifically for this purpose ... either stand alone or with an attachment on a regular scanner. I have one, and it works really well. I paid $75 for the scanner about 5 years ago, so we aren't talking a lot of money, likely you could get one for $50 these days.

Mine is a regular scanner with an attachement that sits on the scanner window. It has a frame for the slides or negatives to line them up, and a lighting unit that goes over the top. It is the illumination that is needed to sucessfully scan a slide (or negative). Also, you scan at a higher resolution.

If time is an issue and money is not, then take them to your local photo shop and they will do them for a price. I prefer doing it myself as I then have more control over the process and can do them precisely as I want them.

If you have a museum, take him there and look at the artwork. Another thing would be to go to a library and check out some books about famous painters. Maybe expose him to some classical music.
