It really is a combination of factors. Unlike many countries, almost everyone has a car and uses it for the most mundane tasks, as well as going to stores across town, work, etc..
Although we eat well (and a lot), we don't necessarily eat healthy...lots of processed, fatty, sugary, additive filled foods. There's a growing belief that a lot of our problems comes from the effects of additives in our foods, as well as just too many calories.
Our jobs, as a whole, are very sedentary...not much hard, manual labor anymore. We work long hours, but don't burn calories. So unlike many countries where just the activities of daily living help keep us fit, we have to "schedule" in exercise.
There is more "cocooning" going on. This is a fairly new phenonmenon where families are staying home. We have access to so many entertainment options that we just don't leave the house anymore. And in some parts of the country, even if we wanted to, there are places where you don't want to leave your home for safety reasons.
I hope that answers your questions...and no offense taken. It is a very real problem.

Because everything is drive through or drive up, I mean, you don't even have to get out of your car to get liquor! We don't have as much leisure time as Europeans. Not as much emphasis is put on riding bikes or walking or sports (unless it's American football, baseball or basketball, and those are usually for the high school kids). I also think laziness has a bit to do with it. These are the only answers I can think of, and I'm American. I was in Europe for a while and while I was there, I rode my bike everywhere because that's what everyone else did. We only took cars if we were going a long distance away.

I live in the U.S, and honestly I agree with you. People eat all they want and are too lazy to exercise. I love to exercise and I don't eat too much because personally I'm disgusted with the way some people abuse food and don't get out sometimes and take a walk.
Also, lately I have seen more and more fast food places being built, also restaurants. I mean, come on, if the U.S has a weight rate problem, these establishments will only worsen it!
A lot of people here eat junk food, like candy, cookies and chips, also fast food. It's revolting, and I don't know why more and more U.S citizens are abusing these junk foods.

Do you think you're better than us because you're from Europe? Personally, I am 5 foot 7, and weigh 120 pounds. I jog as much as possible and enjoy exercising.
Why is the "average american" overweight? I heard somewhere that a big part of the reason why people who live in the Japan are so much smaller than us is because we eat much bigger portions. It's not like we are not trying to do anything about it; I keep hearing people are overweight but when I go to the gym, I always see a lot of people working-out and in magazines, I frequently see that they are trying to help people lose weight. Perhaps it's also because a lot of americans have very busy lives, so instead of cooking for themselves, they eat our a lot..? There is a lot of advertising for fast food companies on T.V... which of course encourages people to eat out. A lot of people go to college, learn how to run a business or be successful at whatever it is they went to school for, but never learn how to cook a meal for themselves.. or manage their money.

I think the average American is more plump these days due to a number of things including poor diet and sedentary lifestyles. We are much fatter than our ancestors. We depend too much on our cars, watch tv or play on the computer 10 hours a day, and depend on fast food restaurants and snack companies to provide our food. We spend billions on advertising and exercise equipment, diet pills, and miracle drugs to lose weight, yet we are fatter than ever. We don't understand that a simple diet and exercise will help us get healthy, fit, toned, and help relieve our stresses. It took us years to get fat, but we want something that will make us "skinny" no matter the cost to us. I think Europeans are healthier overall because you are a healthier eating and more active culture. It is the norm to eat several small meals a day and to exercise, or walk, a lot to your destinations. Your culture has figured out how to stay healthy. Congratulations.

Generally speaking, Americans have much larger portion sizes than many other cultures, eat more unhealthy food - junk food, fast food, etc. - due to busy lifestyles and drive or ride most everywhere compared to Europeans who eat healthier, normal sized portions and generally walk a lot more. Also, generally speaking, many do not have time or do not like to exercise.
Remember most Americans are descended from Europeans so the big boned thing would not apply any more than it would there.

Americans are a very lazy society. We are used to everything being handed to us and not havig to work for anything. So most people eat their Big Mac in front of their big screen tv's for hours and all that fat congeels to thier a**. I am an American that is fully disgusted by America's laziness in many areas including fitness and education. I will never allow that to happen to me, and I have a completely different attitude, and that's why I will be on top looking down at all the fatties.

Americans have a diet which is high in Fat and Caleries. Fast food, snacks, and other junk food is the average diet. While in Europue, the diet is more balanced and better planned for a healthyer lifestyle. Americans are also so busy, physical activity such as exercise is not high on the list, where Europians find the time.

Little exercise and addiction to fast foods which are loaded with fat, sodium, and sugar.
Short answer, we're lazy. Too lazy to get off the couch and cook a healthy meal. So, we go to a drive thru. The only thing getting thinner in America is our wallets.
