You are far better off buying a good quality Progressive scan DVD (connected using quality component video and optical) player then purchasing a moderately priced upconvert dvd player (using HDMI). Remember you need to use quality cables, ideally with silver. If you're looking for the best, if you have a Samsung LCD I would use the Samsung Blu-Ray...Samsung LCDs will accept 1080p signals and downconvert them.

If your TV has an HDMI input, you are better off getting a DVD player with HDMI output. There are two reasons:
1) The signal stays digital tlhroughout, from the recording through the TV circuitry. If you use any other video connection, the signal is converted to analog in the player, then re-converted to digital in the TV set. These conversions can reduce the quality of the signal.
2) The better players will "upconvert" the resolution of the signal to HD values (720p or 1080i), and you will run your set in the HD mode. This will usually produce a better picture than when the set is fed the original DVD reolution of 480i or 480p.
So to get the best results, look for an "upconverting" DVD player with HDMI output.

Up to a certain point, yes.
A $20 no-name DVD player will give much poorer video quality than a $500 Denon DVD player. Especially with features nowadays with Progressive Scan and Upconversion. The more expensive players implement these features much better, resulting in a much better image.
I say up to a certain point because consumer electronics are a prime example of Diminishing Returns; at the low end of the scale, spending a bit more will result in huge gains (ie. from a $20 to a $120 DVD player), but at the higher end, you have to spend a LOT more to get very little gain (from a $2000 to $10,000 DVD player).

I guess the best bet for you would be to buy a dvd player with a s video port for the best viewing quality and to justify the LCD TV investment. I am not sure abt which one is the best but i would recommend you to invest in a decent (if not too expensive) player to get the best out of your TV. I would recommend not to buy polariod (based on my buy and experience). Samsung dvd players are good too..as always do comparision shopping before you buy, just not the price but also the features.

Not really but it depends on your TV and if it is high def. The best DVD player for your TV would be the one that has the best connection to your TV. HDMI would be the best connection, followed by component, then composite or RCA jack.Followed lastly by coaxial.
