Yes that is a big difference.
I think the similarity is that it is a perversion.
I do think that it does hurt many people just not in the same way.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not going to defend pedophiles, because most of them are pretty sick and disgusting perverts...but sometimes it's not just the older person who feels the attraction. Likewise, homosexual rape is sick and disgusting too, but when it's homosexual love, that's apparently okay to a lot of people... As a friend of mine would say, "It's all a matter of perspective."
With the dramatic change in the way this generation thinks about sex compared to last generation, I wouldn't be surprised if in the future we'll have another sexual revolution one day where pedophilia becomes more accepted. It's a sick thought right now, but so was homosexuality just a few years ago, but look at the way we deal with that now. (Just for the record, I'm heterosexual, but I see nothing wrong with homosexual love. It's a personal choice that the person has to make themselves.)
Looking back in the history books, you'll find that in the early days of the US, pedophilia was accepted, and didn't have the negative connotation we now associate it with today. Curious, because back in those times, it was just a simple matter of an older man taking a young wife for himself, whether the female was interested in him or not. If this is not pedophilia, then I don't know what is.
Point being, for whatever reasons (understandable ones at that) the church does not recognize homosexuality as an acceptable form of love, and so compares it to the more extreme case of pedophilia for an argument, because not more than a decade ago, both were equally as disgusting to consider. I don't fear the end of the world here, but I believe the church is on its last legs as far as influencing ignorant people goes.

Of course it is an important difference.
I'm surprised you didn't get the "bestiality" answers as well.
People rail against what they don't (or refuse to) understand. Or perhaps what they are tempted by. Part of this irrational fear sometimes involves trying to compare gay people to pedophiles so that they can appeal to a base act that is reprehensible to all people, gay or straight.
I wish that such people would look at the actual statistics, where it has been overwhelmingly shown that more than 80% of pedophiles are straight men, NOT gay men. I don't remember the exact figure, but it could be over 90%.
This argument also falls under, "I don't have any logical reason to be against it, so I will throw out as many illogical ones as I can and hope that one sticks."
You see this in the gay marriage "debate" as well, like the people who say the human race will die out, or that only people who can have children deserve to get married, etc. rant etc. etc. etc.
Fortunately the average person can tell the difference between sound argument and blatent lies.
p.s. People who say "love the sinner, hate the sin" are hypocrites who obviously and blatently hate both.

Sappho said: According to Jesus' teachings, those Christian leaders who preach against homosexuality are false prophets who defy the teachings of Jesus. Any good Christian, even if they are made uncomfortable by the idea of homosexuality, would never judge a person for being gay.
That's not correct. Preaching against homosexuality isn't wrong, bc it's a sin. It's a perversion of God's gift of sex, which He designed to be used in marriage between a man and a woman. I agree that we shouldn't judge someone for being homosexual, however Christians need to speak against it and not tolerate that behavior bc it is sinful.
An important thing to understand is that the only thing that makes someone a homosexual, is that they engage in homosexual behavior, just bc you have those attractions doesn't make you a homosexual, it's only when you engage in the behavior that you are a homosexual.
We are to hate the sin (homosexual behavior) but love the sinner (homosexual). The problem is, many homosexuals identify themselves with their behavior or say they're born that way, which isn't true, there's no evidence for that, I've looked, and that makes it harder to speak against, bc when we condemn the behavior they see it as condemning them as ppl.

First, I must say that I'm against the concept of bringing homosexuality into the mainstream of American life. Many people, including myself, feel that it is abnormal behavior practiced by few and frowned on by most.
However, that doesn't make homosexuality wrong. I just think that most people don't want to be exposed to it in any manner.
The Clintonian "Don't ask, don't tell" philosophy seems to be the best solution at this time in human cultural evolution.
However, pedophilia is wrong and should be abhorred by everyone.

homosexuality does hurt others even when it is consented to. It is very much like the heterosexual battered wife who stays in a marriage because she is too scared to leave. She consents to sex with her husband. She chooses to stay in danger. Does her consent make it healthy? No of course not. Likewise homosexuality is harmful to both parties because it keeps them from attempting to find a genuine relationship. It cheapens sex to something it was not intended to be.Also the health risks are well documented, even if the facts have been twisted by the homosexual activist.

Equating pedophilia and homosexuality is an old chestnut used by the religious right and other bigots. The two have nothing to do with one another; in fact, more straight guys are pedophiles than gay guys. It's a completely different thing.

Do you mean by the "religious" community or the "Christian" community...cuz there is a difference. the religious community views just about EVERYTHING that isn't cohesive w/ their beliefs as a mortal failure. the Christian community however wouldn't say that. True Christians do view homosexuality as a sin, I am a Christian btw, but we also view things like cursing, smoking, gluttony, putting wrong things into your body i.e. caffeine even, which are things that Christians do, myself included (minus the smoking) everyday. a TRUE Christian isn't going to hate someone because they are homosexual or call them a pedophile. and they aren't going to try to change them. the Bible says God's word is sufficient, so a Christian should live their life according to the way God told us to, a loving heart, a merciful grace filled heart, and shouldn't judge anyone or condemn them to hell, as if they could. and to all that might jump on me and say that i hate homosexuals because i say it's a sin, well, smoking is a sin, and i don't hate people who smoke, so it's the same thing.

Another very, very important difference is that pedophilia occurs in tandem with identifiable psychological disturbances. Homosexuality does not, and in fact the psychological makeup of homosexuals and heterosexuals is identical save for the object of their desire. Such nutballs who make that comparison are grasping at straws in an attempt to justify their 13th century views towards sexuality.

Some interesting things that Jesus said:
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." -Matthew 7:1-2
"Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."
-Matthew 9:19
"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves." -Matthew 7:15
According to Jesus' teachings, those Christian leaders who preach against homosexuality are false prophets who defy the teachings of Jesus. Any good Christian, even if they are made uncomfortable by the idea of homosexuality, would never judge a person for being gay.

There is a major difference, but what's "wrong" with homosexuality can be traced back to Sodam and Gomorrah, when G-d smote the city of sin and Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt.
I think they compare the two to make it seem like they're equally evil.
