After your dress comes in or after you purchase it. You'll want to get the first set of alterations made ASAP to prevent problems down the road. You may also want to get your final one done a few weeks to a month before to make sure that you have not changed in size enough to affect the dress.

I own a bridal store, so I guess you would say I am an expert of some sort on this topic. We schedule 1st fittings 4 weeks before the wedding. Most of the time it takes a couple of fittings to finalize everything. We can't do bustles (the things that hold the train up during the reception) until the hem is done, so it does take a few fittings. If you are talking about actually trying dresses on to choose one, we recommend about 6 mos. before the wedding. I am a bridal store owner, not a miracle worker, so whoever said stores can get dresses for you earlier if they want your business is WRONG!! I have no control over my manufacturers shipping dates, so it is wise to order your dress 6 months prior because regular shipping takes 12-15 weeks. Hope this helps.

We planned our whole wedding in 3 months and when we went to bridal shops they made such a big deal and kept going on that they may not be able to make the dress in time. They generally say about 3 months but if they really want your business they'll do it in less time.
My recommendation would be to try to buy off the rack if you can and then have the minor alterations to have it fit properly. Everyone I know who has had their dress made has had so many problems (eg wrongs buttons, wrong shape, wrong colour etc). The big problem is that, if the dress is being made, you usually don't see it until pretty late in the piece at which time it can be very hard to fix things if something is wrong.

I got it right after the gown got to the shop. It must have been about 2 months before the wedding. Talk to whoever is doing the alterations - tell them if your weight fluctuates a lot or if you're losing weight for the wedding. They'll be able to help you set out a schedule. Good luck!

I got my dress on ebay and the measurements were my size, however it did need to be altered because it was too long. I waited until about a month before the wedding and had it taken up. That gave me enough time to take bridal pictures, have the dress cleaned and pressed. Some girls dont have their dresses finished until the week before because of weight changes before the wedding. My dress ended up pretty snug two weeks before when taking bridals, but fit just fine on the day. My wieght was all over the place the month before.

I got my first fitting 6 weeks before the wedding, and I needed 4 fittings. Leave plenty of time to pick up the dress before the wedding...I picked mine up three days before and the zip split while trying it on. They put another in, but they put it in 1/8 inch too small, instead of letting is out 1/8 inch which was requested. They then had to redo the zip, and I got the dress 12 hours before the wedding, eek!

I worked at a bridal shop-do it 4-6 weeks before your wedding, if you are losing weight do it 4 weeks if you stay the same 6 weeks is fine. then you will do a final fitting the week of your wedding, unless you had major alterations do it a couple weeks before so if needed they can do additional. Make sure you get a cost on alterations, they can be a killer.

I have scheduled my first fitting for Aug. 17th and my wedding is on Oct. 7th. You don't want to have it too early, in case your size changes a little. Make sure and bring your shoes and undergarments you plan on wearing on your wedding so it can be the prefect fit.
Note: I do live in small town Nebraska, so a shop in a bigger city may require more time.

1 year before the wedding. It was on sale, it was beautiful and the last one of that particular style that I really liked so I bought it and made sure I was still able to fit into it.
