I would have to say that the ability to prove God's existence would defeat the purpose of believing in him. If you can prove it with your mind, there is no point in believing it with your heart. Why would a God want someone to believe he exists because they have to or only because it was proven that he does in fact exist. What kind of faith is that - to only believe on account of undeniable proof?

No.
God's existence can be proven or disproven to the same reasonable standards we use to prove/disprove anything else. It just can't generally be undeniably proven/disproven.
But that isn't a reasonable standard. It's an arbitrary standard invented for the sole purpose of building a protective wall around a preconception.

The problem with that is that it leaves God's existence up in the air. That leaves room for arguments and arguments...ummm, are bad.
If ALL (not just two) sides can agree to disagree and respect each other (and know when your religion should stay out of my life) then maybe things would be okay.
However, because you (not you personally) are trying to make your God's "laws" (e.g. no gay marriage) binding on me, then you're going to have to proove he exists before I will let your religion affect my life.

"Can't both sides just agree that God can not be proven or disproven?"
No. Depending on how you define "god", it's existence can sometimes be disproven.

One would think this would go without saying.
You can't prove there is no God, because you can't prove a negative. Even in the absence of ALL evidence, the possibility would always exist.
On the other hand, you can't prove God does exist. God Himself could prove his own existence were He to submit Himself to empirical study, but He's shown a particular reluctance to this point.
The reason for that is because "Without faith, it is impossible to please God." Yet if we were able to prove He exists, it would not require faith to believe in Him and obey Him.

Because someone that has experienced the power of God in their life would say that He exists.
While someone that has never experienced anything at all about God would say that He doesn't exist.
The two sides cannot be reconciled.

I agree I also wish people would stop looking for Noahs Ark. Because if they did people would go crazy. If God wanted it found they would have found it already.

He who asserts must prove. The onus is on a person asserting a positive to prove it. Atheists have nothing to prove. They don't have to argue, they don't have to reason or to persuade. They can be truly free.
